Suspect vehicle backs into Tampa police car

TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Tampa Police said officers were conducting a narcotics operation this morning around 1:00 a.m. and as they attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, police said the driver of the suspect vehicle accelerated in reverse and ran into one of the unmarked police vehicles behind him.

Both officers had exited and were approaching the suspect as this happened, police said. One of those officers fired at the suspect as he then attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle, police said.

Then, police said the suspect hit a curbed parking space and stopped.

Police said the scene is the Radiant/Marathon gas station on the 1900 block of Dale Mabry Highway N.

Police said the suspect and passenger were taken into custody and the passenger received minor cuts from glass shatter and was treated at the scene.

There was no injury to the driver or the officers, according to Tampa PD.

Police said charges and verifying identity are pending.
