ST. PETERSBURG (970 WFLA) -- St. Pete police are questioning a teen boy in the shooting of a 13-year-old girl.
Danajha Jackson was taken to All Children's Hospital for surgery after she was shot in her home on Elkcam Boulevard Southeast Tuesday afternoon. She's in good condition and expected to recover.
Police first reported that they believed the shooting was accidental, and that the bullet came from a handgun that Jackson's 14-year-old cousin Jonathan Gilbert was attempting to unload. He disappeared soon after the family arrived at All Children's Hospital. He turned himself into police at 5 a.m. with the assistance of his step-father. After being interviewed by detectives he was released back into the custody of his family.
Detectives will be attempting to identify the individual responsible for providing him the firearm. Police haven't found the gun yet.
No charges have been filed, but according to St. Petersburg police officials, detectives will be consulting with the State Attorney's Office.
