New "Winter" the Dolphin Movie Gets $5 Million from State

CLEARWATER, Fla. (970 WFLA/AP)- "Dolphin Tale 2" is set to begin filming this fall at Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

The first "Dolphin Tale" movie had more than 55 production days in 2010 and added $17 million in revenue to the state. After the film's release, attendance at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium quadrupled to about 750,000 annual visitors last year.

"Dolphin Tale" was inspired by the real-life rescue and rehabilitation of Winter the dolphin. Winter drew international attention several years ago when she was fitted with a prosthetic tail. The sequel will focus on another dolphin calf named Hope that was rescued in 2010. Both Hope and Winter remain at Clearwater Marine Aquarium with an older dolphin named Panama.

"Dolphin Tale 2" is scheduled to hit theaters on Sept. 19, 2014.
