Car crashes into Winter Haven store, narrowly misses customer

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Winter Haven Police say an 84-year-old woman crashed her car through the front of CVS in Winter Haven narrowly missing a customer inside and causing an estimated $65,000 in damages.

Police say it happened Wednesday just before 5 p.m. The woman drove her husband to the store off SR 540, police said, and the woman stayed in the car while her husband went inside.

When he came back out of the store, police say she began backing out of the parking space and struck an SUV that was driving in the parking lot. Police say her husband came outside and she drove the car back into the parking spot. Police say for unknown reasons, the woman then accelerated forward and crashed through the front doors of the store, landing approximately 25 feet inside.

Inside of the store, police say an 80 year-old woman was walking along the front counter pushing a shopping cart and looking at things, she stopped and moved back a few feet to reach something. Police say as she leaned down to retrieve the item, the vehicle came crashing through the door destroying the counter and narrowly missing her. The shopper was taken to the hospital where she was treated for cuts and  bruises, police said. A store employee did rush over to help both the woman who was shopping and the driver of the vehicle, police said.

Police say the driver was cited for improper backing and careless driving.
